The Panel's Role in the Review

Premier Ed Stelmach initiated a public review of the province’s royalty and tax regime to ensure Albertans are receiving a fair share from energy development through royalties, taxes and fees.

On February 16, 2007, Finance Minister Lyle Oberg announced the appointment of a six-member panel of experts to complete the review in a thorough and impartial manner.

The Royalty Review Panel is independent of government. A Royalty Review Secretariat comprised of staff from Alberta Finance and Alberta Energy provides technical and administrative support as directed by the panel.

As part of the review, the panel will gather input from interested Albertans and key stakeholders through a series of public meetings. The panel also has the ability to request additional information and research as required.

It is anticipated that the panel will present its recommendations to the Finance Minister by August 31, 2007.

The recommendations will be reviewed and considered through the regular government processes. The Government of Alberta will make the final decision about the province’s royalty and tax regime, based on recommendations from the panel.
